Aviation Week Debrief: How a Magyar Commander Helped Shape Autonomous Warfare
On 5 October 2026 Steve Trimble, Defense Editor of Aviation Week, published a Debrief column tracing Robert “Magyar” Brovdi's path since 24 February 2022 and arguing that it largely leads to the proposed U.S. Autonomous Warfare Command. Full Ukrainian translation: see the Ukrainian page.

What the column says
- From volunteer to commander. A grain trader and real-estate developer, Brovdi enlisted as a territorial-defence rifle-platoon leader three weeks before the full-scale invasion, helped evacuate civilians under fire as Russian forces advanced on Kyiv and then, with his own money and without orders, founded a small aerial-reconnaissance unit, Magyar's Birds, which grew into a battalion, a regiment and a brigade.
- The technological break. To overcome Russian electronic warfare the unit began using fibre-optic FPV drones, which, the column says, made Ukraine a pioneer of a new kind of low-altitude air war; in Trimble's assessment the mass use of that single innovation reshaped the front into a 40–50 km no-man's land between thinly manned observation posts.
- USF since June 2025. As the second Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Brovdi unified drone command, recruitment and training nationwide, scaled ground robots and built middle- and deep-strike campaigns that, the column says, helped Ukraine blunt Russia's 2026 summer offensive.
- An American institution. On 30 September 2026 the Pentagon announced the Autonomous Warfare Command, a four-star functional command with a target establishment date of 1 October 2027, subject to Congress, with Project Agincourt as the interim step over the coming year; Trimble had earlier reported a $54.6 billion fund for an Autonomous Warfare Group in the FY2027 reconciliation request. He also notes Brovdi's Telegraph remark that four NATO members intend to create similar forces.
- Trimble's conclusion. Military leaders worldwide increasingly treat autonomy as a capability on a par with space, logistics, cyber and nuclear forces — and few military practitioners, if any, deserve more credit for that shift than the head of Ukraine's USF.
